Dangerous Men's Bathroom Doors Go to Arbitration!
9/25/2008
NFFE 1450 members in 10 offices vote in great show of solidarity vote unanimously to go to Arbitration on the Los Angeles Men’s Bathroom Door Grievance.

A little history on the matter:

Almost 3 years ago, the Union notified management of this safety hazard and unsafe working condition and both parties mutually agreed to have the issue referred to the HUD Los Angeles Field Office (LAFO) Safety and Health Committee. The issue was included in a 2005 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

In accordance with the August 26, 2005 MOU, the HUD LAFO Safety and Health Committee evaluated the safety threat of the men’s bathroom doors, unanimously found it to be a safety hazard, and recommended to the HUD Los Angeles Field Office Director, Theresa Camiling, that management remedy the safety hazard.

This continuing condition of an unsafe working condition for almost 3 years is a violation of Article 27, Section 27.05 of the HUD Region 9-NFFE Local 1450 Labor Management Agreement. The Union notes that a continuing condition may be grieved at any time pursuant to Article 9, Section 9.12.B of the LMA, and therefore filed a Grievance of the Parties in July of 2008.

After the denial of the Grievance of the Parties, the Union requested a meeting with Regional Director Richard Rainey in the hope of resolving the matter but he responded with only “I don’t believe that’s necessary”.
